Understanding Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can occur in any part of the body but are more common in the lower extremities.  These veins can be due to genetic default but this is not the only cause. Other contributing factors can be prolonged standing or pregnancy. For many women, the first signs of varicose veins appear during pregnancy. Obesity is also a contributing factor. The added pressure of supporting excess weight is almost certain to result in chronic venous breakdown.

Varicose Vein Prevention

Prevention for varicose veins initially begins with the wearing of support hosiery or compression stockings. They can significant improve circulation of blood. Wearing properly fitted therapeutic compression hosiery, especially during pregnancy, may help lower the risk of thromboembolic disease. Healthy diet is also appreciated if you like to avoid the occurrence of varicose veins.

Varicose Vein Treatments

Varicose vein treatment may be requested for cosmetic purposes or if the veins become painful. In most cases, varicose veins are not painful. However, some people experience aching, burning, cramping, itching and swelling. For some the pain will get worse after sitting or standing for long periods. If skin ulcers occur near the ankles it may mean that, the patient has severe vascular disease and medical attention is needed immediately. Seeking help from a varicose vein doctor is always an option.
